★ Celebrate Tucson, AZ | The University of Arizona From top: Located in one of the most bicycle-friendly cities in the U.S., the university is a student rider’s paradise; Erin Clair, class of 2012, traveled with UA professors to Mongolia continued from page 87 Not only are UA researchers contributing to sustaining the world’s food supply, they’re also devising new approaches to common health issues. Frustrated by low survival rates of cardiacarrest patients, Dr. Gordon Ewy of the UA’s Sarver Heart Center and his research group began to rethink the tried-and-true method of CPR. They discovered that victims whose hearts suddenly stop outside of a health-care environment stand a better chance of survival if bystanders immediately begin chest compressions and skip mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. These findings are leading the way to changes in guidelines for the American Heart Association and first responders. Similarly, Dr. Tom Grogan, a UA professor of pathology, sought faster and more accurate cancer diagnoses for patients. In the mid-1980s he convened a team of researchers from the university and the local community who revolutionized systems to automate, standardize, and personalize tissue biopsy testing. Their bold solutions gave rise to a new company, Ventana Medical Systems Inc., later acquired by the international Roche Group in 2008. Today, Ventana’s initial approach of studying the chemical makeup of patients’ tissue is giving rise to more tailor-made treatments — and hope for patients and physicians everywhere. The Student Life So just what is the appeal of University of Arizona — apart from four rugged mountain ranges, 350 days of sunshine, and endless opportunities for outdoor adventure? What is it that attracts talented, ambitious students from all 50 states and more than 110 countries? Answer: Every one of those students gets the chance to work alongside the UA’s renowned faculty and researchers addressing some of humanity’s greatest questions in their labs, in the field, and even in outer space. UA’s culture demands that students learn by participating and making meaningful contributions all along the way. Or, in the words of Erin Clair, who graduated in May with a double major in anthropology and physiology, “Class is where you do well, but the experiences outside are where you learn.” For Clair, that meant studying ceramic artifacts in Chengdu, China, and accompanying John Olsen, PhD, UA regents’ professor of anthropology, to Tibet and Mongolia. There, he and another UA researcher, Jeffrey Altschul, PhD, are developing ways to maintain Mongolian culture near the Oyu Tolgoi gold and copper mine in the Gobi Desert. This means preserving ancient burial sites and establishing museums and cultural facilities so local residents can retain their heritage. The work was arduous, and as Olsen recalls: “I put [Clair] through some pretty rough experiences in Tibet and Mongolia, but she absolutely thrived.” photo (bottom) courtesy of erin clair 90 DECEmbEr 2012 usairwaysmag.com http://www.usairwaysmag.com
