Many picture the Iditarod, the annual 1,000-mile, eightday race from Anchorage to Nome. Billed as the "Last Great Race on Earth," the contest includes teams of 12 to 16 dogs that look just like the prototypical Walt Disney sled dog, the Siberian husky. In reality, these multiday affairs make up a fraction of sled dog racing. In the northernmost corners of North America and in chilly pockets around the globe, sled dog racing is a vibrant sport, with events held most weekends. There are sprint and distance events, teams ranging from two to 20 dogs, and competitors of almost every age competing in a multitude of classes. # THE DOGS ARE HAPPIEST WHEN THEY'RE MOVING. "It's one of the few sports on an international level where in most classes women and men compete on an absolutely level playing ﬁeld," says Johnn Molburg, a sled builder and dog trainer who lives in Tyrone, Pennsylvania. Many of the dogs look different from what you might imagine. While the Alaskan husky (a Siberian husky derivative) is the dog of choice for multiday events, shorter races are run by shorthaired pointer crossbreads that look more like hounds than huskies.
