US Airways - December 2014 - (Page 256)

Window or Aisle? engage Chatting with a Frequent Flyer Bonnie McElveen-Hunter and mother, Madeline It is fitting for this final issue of US Airways Magazine that we have our last Window or Aisle conversation with Bonnie McElveen-Hunter. The roots of this magazine go back 42 years, when she founded what became the publication you are reading today. There are very few publishers or editors who have touched a single magazine or newspaper for this length of time. To date, Ms. McElveenHunter's career includes the founding of Pace Communications, one of the world's largest custom content agencies, a U.S. ambassadorship to Finland, and chairman of the American Red Cross, a seat she has held since 2004. She is the first woman to hold the chair position in the 136-year history of the organization. When did you start the first inflight magazine for what would later become US Airways? I started the magazine for Piedmont Airlines in 1972 with the wonderful invitation from Eugene Johnston and Tom Davis. They had trust and confidence in a 20-something young woman with little publishing experience. Other than clothing, what three items would you never travel without? Something for mind, body, and soul. For my mind, a pencil, to tackle the Black Belt sudokus. For my body, a Ziploc bag of walnuts, almonds, and cranberries. And for my soul, a copy of Chuck Colson's speech given at the Harvard Business School, "The Problem of Ethics." I've had the privilege of traveling the world in times of crisis and need, whether to Red Cross shelters after Katrina or in Haiti, or in geopolitical conflict zones in the Darfur refugee camps, DIVIDEND MILES Insider ✈ Any guess as to how many miles you've flown? I'm a million miler almost every year. In all, I think I'm at a gazillion. I spend one third of my year on an airplane. Do you work, sleep, or relax during flights? I do all three! I consider flying wonderful therapy - an escape and, in some ways, therapeutic. The longer the flight, the better. And I keep my fingers crossed for a first-class upgrade! If you could sit next to anyone, past or present, on your next flight, who would it be? My mother. She has filled my life with her pearls of wisdom. Window or Aisle? Aisle on domestic trips, and window on international flights. COMBINING OUR LOYALTY PROGRAMS In the second quarter of 2015, we'll bring the Dividend Miles program into the AAdvantage loyalty program. If you have an AAdvantage and a Dividend Miles account, you'll hear from us early next year with information on how to quickly and easily match your accounts online. We'll merge your Dividend Miles award mileage balance, elite-qualifying activity, 256 DECEMBER 2014 usairwaysmag.com and million-mile balance into your AAdvantage account on a one-to-one ratio. If you don't have an AAdvantage account, we'll create one for you and assign you a new number when we combine the programs. Your existing Dividend Miles balances will automatically be transferred. Learn more about the combined program by visiting aa.com/aadvantage2015. PHOTO BY DAVID WILSON As chairman of the board of the American Red Cross you've traveled the world. Is there any place on the planet you've not been where you'd like to go? or to immunize children for measles in Madagascar. I want to go to places where I'm not simply a traveler, but where I can leave that place a little better than I found it. And by doing so, I am transformed as well. http://www.aa.com/aadvantage2015 http://www.usairwaysmag.com
