Cause and Effects F BY CHRISTOPHER TRELA urthering the arts in diverse Orange County would be a far more daunting task without the efforts of Arts Orange County. 3730 South Susan Street, Suite 100 Santa Ana, CA 714.556.5160 artsoc.org sparkoc.com A nonprofit organization that serves virtually all arts entities of all sizes within the county, Arts Orange County is dedicated to the advancement of the local arts scene. While ArtsOC is the county’s officially designated arts council, 99 percent of its funding comes from private sources. ArtsOC is perhaps best known for its innovative online portal to the arts, SparkOC.com, a free interactive website that contains a comprehensive arts, culture, and entertainment event calendar. ArtsOC also sponsors arts programs, advocates for arts education, creates a network of arts-related individuals and organizations, acknowledges local artists and organizations at an annual awards gala, and consults with groups seeking assistance in their endeavors. Each April and May, ArtsOC copresents (with the county Department of Education) Imagination Celebration, a family-oriented arts festival with more than 50 free or affordable events held at venues throughout Orange County. ArtsOC also presents its annual Creative Edge Lecture highlighting the critical role of creativity in workforce development. By working directly with the California Alliance for Arts Education, ArtsOC has developed a network of local arts alliances within various Orange County school districts. Each alliance is composed of citizens who advocate the importance of a standards-based arts education. Whether it’s informing the public about events, building the capacity of arts organizations, or championing arts education, ArtsOC plays a vital role.
