The hall is located in Aliso Viejo on the campus of Soka University, a small private college and graduate school that U.S. News & World Report ranks in the top seven liberal arts colleges in California and Oregon. Just 11 years old, Soka was founded upon the Buddhist principles of peace, human rights, and the sanctity of life. The school’s commitment to the environment is evident in its new concert venue. While the building makes a spectacular ﬁrst impression, with its angular lines and gleaming glassclad exterior, it was designed for sustainability over time. Featuring a vegetated “green” roof and an array of rooftop photovoltaic cells that generate 15 percent of the building’s electrical needs, Soka Performing Arts Center received a gold LEED certiﬁcation, putting it among the most energy-efﬁcient and environmentally responsible building projects in Southern California. Now, that’s music to our ears. BY JEAN T. BARRETT Sounds Good! Opened in 2011, the 1,000-seat Soka Performing Arts Center boasts acoustics by Yasuhisa Toyota, the acclaimed acoustician who created the sound design for Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles. In the midst of its second full season of symphony, chamber music, and jazz concerts, Soka is bringing a new level of musical experience to Orange County. This month and next, the performing arts center will host concerts by Orange County’s own Paciﬁc Symphony, the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields, piano recitalist Barry Douglas, and jazz ensemble the Kenny Werner Trio, among many other artists.
