The City of Fullerton loves the arts — and the arts love Fullerton back. Cultural to the Core T BY CHRISTOPHER TRELA he city of Fullerton is known as north Orange County’s go-to for dynamic, quality arts entertainment. Clockwise from top left: Muckenthaler Cultural Center, built in 1924; Fullerton College’s production of A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum; zombies attack in a scene from Night of the Living Dead at the Maverick Theater Three diverse organizations have helped establish that reputation: Fullerton College, Muckenthaler Cultural Center, and Maverick Theater. The Fine Arts Division at FULLERTON COLLEGE celebrates the arts every day through rigorous classes, performances, and exhibitions. Each semester, almost 10,000 students receive training in art, music, theater, and computer graphics, preparing them for transfer, employment, and a lifelong appreciation of the arts. The Music Department is composed of 26 performance groups and hosts three festivals, including its famous Jazz Festival. Theatre Arts produces six fulllength plays and as many as 20 one-act plays, a playwrights’ festival, high school theater festival, a directors’ festival, and a summer musical theater conservatory. The Art Department produces a varied exhibition series — anchored by an artist-in-residence program — and houses one of the most extensive college permanent art collections. fcfinearts.fullcoll.edu/division THE MUCKENTHALER CULTURAL CENTER PHOTOS (ABOVE, LEFT TO RIGHT): ZACH HODGES, COURTESY OF FULLERTON COLLEGE; (LEFT) BRIAN NEWELL presents a range of cultural programs in a 1924 villa built by Walter and Adella Muckenthaler. Now in its 48th year, the center affectionately known as “the Muck” produces more than 75 performances, exhibits, festivals, and special events each year (often free), and offers more than 2,000 hours of arts education classes. The Muck won the coveted Arts Program of the Year award from Arts Orange County in 2010, was an OC Register finalist for Best Museum, and was recently named Most Eclectic Venue by Orange Coast Magazine. themuck.org Founded in 2002, the MAVERICK THEATER is known for stage adaptations of popular movies. The theater’s annual production of Night of the Living Dead has become an OC favorite. Joseph Musil, designer of Disney’s famous El Capitan Theatre, created the Maverick’s art deco interior. mavericktheater.com 118 FEBRUARY 2013 usairwaysmag.com http://fcfinearts.fullcoll.edu/division http://www.themuck.org http://www.mavericktheater.com http://www.usairwaysmag.com
