BY JOSH JENISCH ith the postcard-perfect vistas of Laguna Beach as the backdrop, the Festival of Arts enchants visitors with world-class art, special events, and more. Founded in 1932, the Laguna Beach Festival of Arts has evolved into one of the most important and well-attended art shows in the nation. Every summer, hundreds of thousands of visitors descend on the hilly seaside town to join the festivities of this rigorously juried exhibition, where the works of 140 local artists are on display. Festival events unfold over eight weeks from June 30 through August 31, and include art workshops, wine tastings, nightly musical entertainment, hands-on demonstrations, and plenty of dining options. The heart of the festival, however, is the art. The quality and sheer variety of the artwork you’ll ﬁnd here is staggering. Orange County’s most prominent artists show and sell paintings, photographs, sculpture, jewelry, handcrafted furniture, ceramics, glass, and more. “There’s something for everyone,” says Sharbie Higuchi, the festival’s director of marketing and public relations. “Visitors can view and purchase artwork, take an art tour, catch a demonstration, or just sit back and enjoy the live music.” In the 81 years since it was established, the show has grown exponentially, maturing into a truly world-class affair. “When you consider its humble beginnings as the very ﬁrst art show in Orange County,” Higuchi says, “the metamorphosis of the festival is remarkable.” Whether you’re looking for original art or just want to revel in the creative energy, the Laguna Beach Festival of Arts is worth exploring. 126 FEBRUARY 2013 usairwaysmag.com http://www.foapom.org http://www.usairwaysmag.com
