T PHOTOS COURTESY OF FESTIVAL OF ARTS In an elaborate game of copycat, Pageant of the Masters re-creates great art with live performers. he centerpiece of the Laguna Beach Festival of Arts is Pageant of the Masters, a celebration of the art form known as tableaux vivants, or “living pictures.” Da Vinci’s The Last Supper reproduced in immaculate detail; Michelangelo’s Pieta looking every bit as real as the version that sits in the Vatican. “I like to think the show we put on is very special,” says Diane Challis Davy, pageant director. “I’m lucky to be surrounded by people who love the hard work it takes to produce a very elaborate show.” This year, the pageant explores the intersection of art and cinema with its theme, “The Big Picture.” “Looking at masterpieces through the viewﬁnder of motion pictures provides fascinating food for thought,” says longtime pageant scriptwriter Dan Duling. “Great art has always inspired motion pictures.” Held nightly from July 7 through August 31 at the Irvine Bowl, the Pageant of the Masters is an incomparable spectacle — one that will forever change the way you see art. BY JOSH JENISCH Bringing Art to Life Each year, the pageant re-creates dozens of classical and contemporary works of art on stage using an army of local residents. These faithful reproductions of paintings and sculptures, featuring volunteers posed to look just like their counterparts in the originals, are breathtakingly realistic. Through the clever application of makeup, costumes, lighting, props, and backdrops, pageant organizers are able to craft living works of art that are all but indistinguishable from the originals. This exacting process requires more than 60,000 volunteer hours and months of planning. The results, however, are extraordinary.
