These earliest shows introduced the American public to exotic plant species, such as the poinsettia from Mexico and peony from China. As the show grew and flourished with time, it attracted impressive guests such as Grace Kelly, first lady Barbara Bush, entertainers Bette Midler and Patti LaBelle, and many other international exhibitors and dignitaries. The event has now become the largest indoor flower show in the world and an annual destination for admirers of natural beauty and the horticultural arts. Britain in Bloom This year, the Flower Show will borrow the popular British expression “brilliant!” to describe its theme, which celebrates the majestic landscapes and creative genius of Great Britain. Exhibits will pay tribute to centuries of British culture, culminating in the urbane design of 21st-century London. Visitors will enter through palace gates adorned with the hues and fragrances of fine English roses, leading to an allée of regal birch trees and the show’s centerpiece: a sculptural, digitally enhanced Big Ben that comes to life at the top of each hour. Other exhibits will also play on Britain’s heritage. You’ll find everything from floral Crown Jewels to rolling English hillsides, sunny village gardens to foggy London streetscapes, the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party to Sgt. Pepper’s band, and moss-covered cottages to Jack the Ripper’s Whitechapel district. The displays will reflect the historic and contemporary landscapes and floral designs of Great Britain, while highlighting the British passion for gardening.
