a pedicure might include a lemon verbena hydrating treatment — and a chardonnay. tus oil. I feel like a blissed-out sugar cookie baking in a warm oven. The orange and ginger smells so heavenly that I long to jar it up, take it home, and spread it on toast. After a quick shower — voila! From tomboy to comely maiden! Angela assures me that my creamy new skin will last for days. She then turns her attention to my knotted hamstrings. Yes, it’s time for the hour-long massage unbottling another selection of herbalinfused oils. Mercy! My yoga teacher tells me that relaxing is a skill, and by the end of that second hour, I must say that I feel like an expert. I wonder if I’m too relaxed to attend dinner, imagining sliding I feel like a blissedout sugar cookie in a warm oven. right out of my chair before the appetizers are even served. Maybe I shouldn’t have checked in an hour early and indulged in the whirlpool and steam room. The spa itself is soothing: Light from large picture windows casts a warm glow on the modern white decor paired with historic accents, like iron lamps and cherry wood chaise longues. (Who doesn’t think rich furnishings at the mere mention of “Williamsburg”?) “Our goal here is to provide a unique service, luckily given to us by our Colonial Williamsburg location,” spa director Kate Mearns says. “Our uniqueness is authentic. We’re not reaching for something different — it’s in our own backyard.” Speaking of which is stunning: a wisteria-laden arbor flanked by the rose-bedecked Fountain Garden, the backdrop for many a bridal portrait and prom picture. As I leave in my newly found state of relaxation (read “totally out of it”), I pick up a brochure and discover the 17th-, 19th-, 20th-, and 21st-century spa experiences. Egad!
