Take the Gold Course at Colonial Williamsburg’s Golden Horseshoe Golf Club. As you crest the ridge on the second hole, you know you’ve embarked on a majestic journey. Then stand on the tee of the par-3 third, looking down across the pond to the green tucked amid sand and water, and you realize the journey is going to be as challenging as it is beautiful. It’s known as one of golf’s greatest undiscovered gems, but it’s actually two complete 18-hole courses and a ninehole executive course crafted by legends in course design. Celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, the Golden Horseshoe features a Robert Trent Jones Sr. masterpiece and the Rees Jones–designed Green Course, giving it the unique distinction of featuring two courses designed by father and son. Located behind the historic Williamsburg Inn, the Robert Trent Jones Sr. Gold Course winds its way through rolling hills and carves through dense corridors of tall pines and oaks. When the course opened nearly a half-century ago Jones himself declared it his “finest design.” Today, it serves as a bridge between early American golf architecture and the modern game. The 16th hole is one of the first island green par 3s. Along with the uphill par-4 17th, it’s featured among the Top 500 Holes in the World, according to Golf Magazine.
