D PHOTO BY CHRIS ARACE The DeWitt Wallace Decorative Arts Museum features one of the largest collections of British and American antiques. rawing on collections from New York to New Orleans, the DeWitt Wallace Decorative Arts Museum will unveil one of its largest exhibits next month — Painters and Paintings in the Early American South. Patrons can expect more than 80 paintings, with several on loan from major museums such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New-York Historical Society, and National Portrait Gallery, to name a few. “It’s a landmark exhibit,” says Carolyn Weekley, the Juli Grainger Curator at The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation. “There has never been a show like this, bringing together a major survey of early Southern paintings and painters who contributed to the artistic climate.” In planning for ﬁve years, the exhibit will showcase paintings from the mid-1730s to the 1790s, a time when portraits were the predominant genre. But look behind those roving eyes and there’s a story to be told. Painters and Paintings connects the subject with the artist, drawing on diaries, correspondence, and news articles to map out their entwined histories. “If you’re interested purely in art, the images are wonderful,” Weekley says. “But learning the history helps you fully understand the art. Paintings can often be read just like books. The stories behind the paintings, as well as the people and things depicted in them, are an important part of the history of the South.” Painters and Paintings’ cast of characters includes both ordinary citizens and the colony’s leaders.
