Painters and Paintings in the Early American South runs from March 23 to September 7, 2014, at the DeWitt Wallace Decorative Arts Museum. For more info, go to colonialwilliams burg.com/museums. by John Singleton Copley, who painted it soon after Laurens was released from the Tower of London in exchange for England’s Lord Cornwallis. “Since Laurens was a powerful leader during the Revolutionary War years, the painting shows him as a powerful figure,” Weekley says. Another canvas shows a young Thomas Nelson Jr., one of the 56 signers of the Declaration of Independence and a native of nearby Yorktown. Mason Chamberlin painted the portrait when Nelson was a student in England. Two other portraits feature his parents, William and Elizabeth Nelson, completed in 1748 by Robert Feke. But perhaps the exhibit’s showstoppers are two portraits of George Washington by Charles Willson Peale, famous for his portraits of leaders of the American Revolution. Other notable artists include John Hesselius, Jeremiah Theus, Charles Bridges, and John Wollaston. While casual culture vultures will enjoy the exhibit, art scholars will find much to marvel about. In fact, the staff expects to host graduate-level art students. “We design our exhibitions for our guests, but curators and museum professionals also will find them engaging,” says Richard Hadley, director of museum design. “We want them to enjoy their museum experience, and give them more information, stories, and context about the displays. Our goal is education in a memorable setting.” Like the historic town outside the museum’s walls, Painters and Paintings places visitors inside history through conversation and context. “With its decorative arts and art collections, Colonial Williamsburg links art with history,” Weekley says. “Doing so makes for a richer understanding of this country’s early years.” And for one remarkable new exhibit. 88 february 2013 usairwaysmag.com http://www.colonialwilliamsburg.com/museums http://www.colonialwilliamsburg.com/museums http://www.colonialwilliamsburg.com/museums http://www.colonialwilliamsburg.com/museums http://www.usairwaysmag.com
