embark From the Editor The Story Behind the Stories The OC, Revisited # I’m an East Coast guy. Born and raised in Philadelphia, I’ve lived in New York, Tennessee, Georgia, and now North Carolina. I’ve traveled from Florida to New England and many places in between — to the point that the whole Eastern corridor has long felt like home. Earlier in my career, I traveled to the West Coast. A lot. Most of my visits were to cities in California, where I spent enough time to know my way around a bit. I was struck by the differences between the coasts from my ﬁrst visit to my fortieth. Some obvious, some subtle. My trips to Southern California usually meant staying in LA and a few times in San Diego. But one venture took me down I-5 from LA, into By Lance Elko Orange County — Anaheim, Irvine, and smaller towns south. My impressions: acres upon acres of subdivisions, miles of ofﬁce parks, and ribbons of highways where every mile looked like the ten I had just passed. And future visits reinforced my view. When we began work on our Orange County feature in this issue, I quickly revised my opinion. I discovered a lively arts scene — music, theater, dance, festivals, and a stellar museum. If you, like me, had a similar impression of the OC, think again. On a future visit, you just might want to check out what’s not so obvious. You can ﬁnd our coverage beginning on page 108.
