US Airways - February 2013 - (Page 96)

Inn has remained faithful to the exacting standards set by the Rockefellers, providing elegance without fuss to hundreds of guests every day. Regular renovations keep the property upto-date, with handsomely decorated Regency-style guest rooms, marble bathrooms with deep soaking tubs and separate showers, and beds so luxurious our colonial forefathers could not have dreamed of such comfort. And what would Thomas Jefferson have thought of flat-screen televisions, dual phone lines, data ports, and Wi-Fi in every room? The Inn’s legendary Regency Room delights the most sophisticated palate with its classic American cuisine. Sunday brunch is a treasured tradition. High Tea is fit for a queen — and a queen did enjoy tea here, twice. Queen Elizabeth II stayed at the Inn in 1957 and again in 2007. The Inn draws visitors from every corner of the globe, including a glittering procession of royalty, heads of state, and celebrities. “It goes without saying that we are honored to host world leaders,” Tate says. “But it is our particular honor to extend hospitality to the people we call our ‘everyday celebrities,’ the people who love Colonial Williamsburg, who return again and again, who develop deep emo- tional attachments to the Inn and use it to build their own family traditions.” Elegant surroundings would count for little without the attention of a first-rate staff, many of whom have worked at the Inn for decades. From the doormen who greet each guest with a “Welcome home” to the chefs who accommodate individual dietary preferences, the Inn prides itself on delivering exceptional service as a matter of course. In 1997, the hotel earned a spot on the National Register of Historic Places, an acknowledgment of its importance to the country and a fitting tribute to the Rockefellers’ vision. Historic Hideaways There’s a Colonial Williamsburg hotel to suit every personality. Since the Williamsburg Inn was built 75 years ago, Colonial Williamsburg’s family of hotels has grown to six, with more than 1,000 rooms between them. Which one best suits you? Are you a history buff? Does living among antiques and reproductions and hearing the clip-clop of horses soothe your spirit? You’ll want to stay at one of the Colonial Houses–Historic Lodging, cozy cottages and tavern rooms within the Revolutionary City. Don’t worry; the amenities are modern (even if they are disguised), and the service is first-class. Wear your colonial outfit and you’ll really think you live in the 18th century. If fife-and-drum parades or occasional cannon fire disturb, then maybe you should go for a more serene setting, such as Providence Hall Guesthouses. Relax on a balcony overlooking a quiet pond or stroll the nature trails that meander through the woodlands. A close neighbor to the Williamsburg Inn, the Guesthouses have contemporary rooms that share all the gracious living the Inn has to offer. But perhaps you’re the artistic sort? The Williamsburg Lodge is for you. With a pedigree almost as distinguished as the Inn’s, the Lodge has earned its beloved spot in Williamsburg hearts. Its 323 beautifully appointed rooms and public spaces showcase a whimsical, folk-art decor. And only a short footpath separates you from the Art Museums of Colonial Williamsburg, the nationally acclaimed museums chock-full of decorative art and folk art. 96 February 2013 usairwaysmag.com http://www.usairwaysmag.com
