Diversions Visitors Reading Terminal claims 6.3 million annual visitors, the numbers swelled by attendees at the adjacent convention center. [6 pts.] Pike Place attracts more than 10 million annual visitors, including cruise ship passengers huffing uphill from the dock. [10 pts.] MEET ME AT THE PIG STATUES At Pike Place Rachel sits under the big neon sign. Dating to the 1980s, she's a popular photo prop and a piggy bank. Donations go to the Pike Place Market Foundation, which funds low-income housing, childcare, medical, and senior centers, plus a food bank - part of Pike Place's mission to be a community- Businesses Pike Place encompasses 14 buildings and sprawls down streets and up six levels. The nine-acre Historic Market District includes outdoor street vendors and busking musicians. In some of its nooks you feel like you've stepped into Harry Potter's Diagon Alley. It boasts some 250 businesses, including bookstores, artisan vendors, a store called Bella Umbrella that sells boutique bumbershoots, a live-performance theater, a magic shop, and the coin-operated Giant Shoe Museum. No chain stores are permitted - except those like Sur La Table and Starbucks, which were founded in the market district. You'll see the original anatomically complete mermaid on the store window of the Starbucks on Pike Place (if the logo isn't blocked by the generally long queue outside). [10 pts.] oriented, nonprofit operation. Rachel now has a relative, Billie, six levels down on Western Avenue. [10 pts.] Reading Terminal followed in Rachel's hoof prints with Philbert, likewise a piggy bank. Here, donations go to a Philadelphia-based nonprofit called the Food Trust, dedicated to providing those in need with affordable, nutritious food. [8 pts.] Reading Terminal fills a nearly two- acre space, covering an entire city block in the very heart of downtown. About 80 independent merchants are arranged along indoor avenues, offering goodies from cheeses to books to housewares to handmade crafts. Here, too, you'll find no national chains. [5 pts.] FOOD IN FLIGHT Flying fish, Seattle 16 FEBRUARY 2014 usairwaysmag.com Reading Terminal offers its own aerial show at Miller's Twist. Behind the counter, Pennsylvania Dutch women create pretzels by deftly tossing and twisting lengths of dough in midair. Fresh from the oven with a buttery glaze, the salty treats make a warm, satisfying snack - and, yes, they come in bacon flavor. [8 pts.] Among the most beloved merchants are the Amish - the men with their beards and straw hats, the women with their long dresses and gauzy head coverings. Buying country-fresh eggs and meats and produce from them is like a trip to Lancaster without hitting the highway. [3 bonus pts.] Market Tour Reading Terminal - On Wednesdays and Saturdays at 10 a.m, take a 75-minute historical tour with a few small tastes, including Bassett's Ice Cream. $16. tasteofphillyfoodtour.com [6 pts.] Pike Place - Six daily two-hour historical and sampling tours with 16 bites. $40. savorseattletours.com [9 pts.] Breakfast Pike Place offers a great view of the morning commuter ferries on Elliott Bay out the windows upstairs at Lowell's, where the coffee is serve-yourself and strong, and the menu includes eggs Benedict with Dungeness crab and scrambled eggs with smoked salmon. [8 pts.] PHOTOS FROM TOP BY WOLFGANG KAEHLER/ALAMY AND BY DURAVITSKI/ALAMY Pike Place's salmon-tossing fishmongers attract elbow-to-elbow crowds. The flying fish is actually a stunt salmon - a real fish used again and again so no buyer's order is bruised. When the fish has flown enough, it's donated to the local zoo and fed to a lucky carnivore.
