Adventure an interchangeable slope pass and nearly 5,000 skiable acres between them, which makes the area equivalent in size to Vail, the nation's largest mountain. Snowbird offers precarious cliff skiing as well as heli-skiing options, and Alta is famous for its narrow, steep chutes. You can access either destina- LODGING: THE ABC's IN SALT LAKE CITY: The top hotels are the Grand America and the Hotel Monaco. The new TRAX rail directly connects the airport with downtown, while public ski buses to Big and Little Cottonwood canyons visit half a dozen major downtown hotels each morning. Both the rail and bus are free with a discounted Ski Salt Lake Super Pass for 1-10 ski days at Brighton, Solitude, Alta, and/or Snowbird. You can decide daily where to ski based on conditions, and the pass includes discounted equipment rentals (visitsaltlake.com). LITTLE COTTONWOOD CANYON: Top lodging options are the Europeanstyle Alta Lodge (altalodge.com) at Alta (alta.com) and the Cliff Lodge at Snowbird (snowbird.com). You can purchase a combined pass for both mountains (no snowboarding at Alta). PARK CITY: Top lodgings at Deer Valley (deervalley.com) are Montage, the St. Regis Deer Valley resort, and Stein Eriksen Lodge. The best at the Canyons (canyonsresort.com) are the Waldorf Astoria Park City and Hyatt Escala Lodge. And there are hotels, condos, B&Bs, and inns across all price points (visitparkcity.com). LITTLE COTTONWOOD CANYON: Solitude (skisolitude.com) has a wide variety of reasonably priced condominiums around its base village and offers a lift ticket that's also good at adjacent Brighton, which offers night skiing (brightonresort.com). 32 FEBRUARY 2014 usairwaysmag.com tion by staying right in the canyon, where virtually every lodging option is ski-in/ski-out, or from downtown Salt Lake, just 35 minutes away. There's no town in the canyon and few luxury bells or whistles - just minimalist European-style lodges, many of which boast full meal plans. The sole exception is the Cliff Lodge at Snowbird, a full-service upscale resort hotel with a spa and fine dining. Every advanced skier or boarder should make a pilgrimage to Little Cottonwood, but staying here for your entire trip is best suited to those who put skiing or boarding all day first and little else second. Park City America's biggest little ski town, Park City is home to three major resorts. Canyons is the largest resort in Utah and fourth largest in the nation, with about 4,000 acres and $75 million in recent improvements. In any other state, Canyons - with a complete base village, numerous hotels, condos, shops, and restaurants, plus a wide array of skiing and boarding for all abilities - would be an international destination in its own right, but in Park City it's just one big slice of the pie. Down the road is Deer Valley, famous for its luxury white-glove touch, family friendliness, and passionately perfect corduroy grooming. This nirvana for beginners and intermediates offers a trio of high-end slopeside hotels (Montage, St. Regis, and Stein Eriksen Lodge) and is among the most opulent resorts in the country. Deer Valley is also the only resort that limits daily ticket sales in order to keep the slopes from getting too crowded. And although there are some surprisingly expert chutes hidden here, Deer Valley is for the leisurely skier who also enjoys gourmet dining and 5-star lodgings or lavish rental. At the opposite end of the spectrum is Park City Mountain Resort (PCMR), the understated, unadorned locals' mountain with lifts running down to Main Street so people can walk from their homes. PCMR has over 3,300 acres of terrain, 16 lifts, and rare night skiing - all included in the regular lift ticket. And Park City is the only Salt PHOTO COURTESY OF VISIT OGDEN OGDEN: There are several mid-price chain hotels in downtown Ogden that offer packages including room, lift ticket, and shuttles to Powder Mountain (powdermountain.com) or Snowbasin (snowbasin.com); these hotels are typically great values (visitogden.com).
