Three of Phoenix's homiest eateries are found
in the Coronado Historic District. Coronado Cafe
(coronadocafe.com) is famous for its Maryland-style
crab cakes. You'll feel at home here, thanks to the
checkered tablecloths and simple, quality food. A
little farther up the road, The Main Ingredient
(tmialehouse.com) lures locals via a lengthy beer list
and a dog-friendly patio.
For barbecue and all the fixins, head to Astor
House (astorinphx.com), which is set in a small
bungalow in the middle of the Coronado neighborhood. Hickory wood-smoked pork, beef, and chicken
come with your choice of sauce. Sides include
collard greens, jalapeno corn bread, and housemade pickles.
one of the most romantic spots in town.
Have a hard time eating your veggies? Not at
Bink's Midtown (binksmidtown.com), owned by
James Beard-nominated Chef Kevin Binkley. Be
sure to check out the separate menu for locally
sourced and in-season veggies. Roasted sweet potatoes come with pomegranate ketchup, and golden
beets get a splash of huckleberry vinaigrette.
Out and About
Small Wonders
Just outside Phoenix, you'll find a few more
homes-turned-restaurants not to be missed. Scottsdale's The House Brasserie (thehousebrasserie
.com) is in an older home with a white picket fence,
but the food is anything but old-timey. Think duck
confit meatballs, basil and brie smashed potatoes,
and scallops with popcorn
puree. In Paradise Valley,
Pizza lovers alert: The chefs at Cibo (cibophoenix
.com) use Italian-imported products and organic
local produce for their crispy wood-fired pizzas
and homemade pastas. Like its neighbor, The Vig
Fillmore, Cibo also exudes comfort. Tables are
cozily arranged in small rooms with hardwood
floors and exposed brick - there's even a fireplace.

the former home and studio
of cowboy artist Lon Megargee. Splurge with the chef's
tasting menu, a five-course
affair. Bon appetit!
