C E L E B R AT I N G BLACK HISTORY MEMORIES REMEMBER WHEN In honor of this year's Black History Month theme of Civil Rights in America, here are a few memorable events in the struggle for equal rights - and the people who helped lead the way. By Ivy Lamb and Meghan Modafferi ➺ After her moving performance at the 1963 March on Washington, celebrated gospel singer Mahalia Jackson called out to Martin Luther King Jr., who was in the middle of a speech: "Tell them about the dream, Martin!" She was referring to a theme she'd heard King explore earlier that year. So King set aside his prepared notes and improvised the most beloved lines of his famous "I have a dream" speech. ➺ The Niagara Movement In 1905, W.E.B. Du Bois and William Monroe Trotter formed a group that advocated for full equal rights for African Americans, including male suffrage, access to education, and the end of segregation. Named for the location of its first meeting at Niagara Falls, New York, the Niagara Movement was the forerunner of the NAACP and directly opposed the more conciliatory approach of author and educator Booker T. Washington. Taking a Seat for Equality ➺ In 1884, 71 years before Rosa Parks' famous bus ride, Ida B. Wells-Barnett refused to give up her seat on a train. After being dragged out of the train car, Wells-Barnett sued the railroad. (The federal Civil Rights Act of 1875 had banned racial discrimination in public accommodations.)
