UNSUNG HERO Bobby Cain ➺ In 1957, Bobby Cain became the South's first African American student to graduate from a desegregated public high school. Each day he and 11 other students met at the African American Green McAdoo School, before walking down the hill to Clinton High School in Clinton, Tennessee. Today, the former school has become the Green McAdoo Cultural Center. "This center isn't important to just the black community," Cain says. "It tells everyone of the hardship that was endured in Clinton." Life-size statues on the museum lawn celebrate the courage of the "Clinton 12." greenmcadoo.org ➺ UNSUNG HERO Septima Poinsette Clark Septima Poinsette Clark, the "queen mother" of the civil rights movement, was an educator and activist who fought for equal pay for teachers. After being fired for her NAACP membership in 1956, she began founding Citizenship Schools to teach African Americans how to read. The schools empowered more than 700,000 adults to pass restrictive literacy tests and become registered voters. Gospel singer Mahalia Jackson shouted, "Tell them about the dream, Martin!" So Martin Luther King Jr. set aside his notes and gave his "I have a dream" speech. UNSUNG HERO Bayard Rustin ➺ In 1955, Bayard Rustin (left) began working with Martin Luther King Jr. as a strategist and mentor. Rustin introduced King to Gandhi's philosophy of nonviolent resistance. He also helped organize the 1963 March on Washington, which led to the passage of the Civil Rights Act the next year. Rustin dared to live as an openly gay man in the '50s and has been called the "lost prophet" of the civil rights movement.
