to join the Union. Afterward, Cheyney returned to
his estate to farm and focused on developing innovative and highly successful farming techniques.
The ICY, which was founded by Quakers in
Philadelphia, moved 25 miles west to the Cheyney
farm in 1902. The school trained students to become teachers, tradesmen, scientists, and farmers.
In 1913, the institute became the State Normal
School, and then the Cheyney State Teachers
College in 1951. By 1959, the school was renamed
Cheyney State College, and in 1983, it joined the
Pennsylvania System of Higher Education as
Cheyney University.
Today, Cheyney students are a diverse mix of
races, cultures, and nationalities. They earn bachelor of arts and bachelor of science degrees in 30
disciplines, as well as master's degrees in education and public administration.
Graduates go on to successful careers in law,
journalism, medicine, business, science, communication, and government service. Well-known alumni include journalist Ed Bradley of 60 Minutes; Jim
Vance, NBC news anchor in Washington, DC;

Founded in 1837, Cheyney University
was the first institution of higher education for blacks in the U.S. Once known as the
Institute for Colored Youth (ICY), the university is
located in Thornbury Township, Pennsylvania,
and spans both Chester and Delaware counties on
land once owned by Squire Thomas Cheyney, a
sub-lieutenant in the local militia and an unsung
Revolutionary War hero.
In 1777, during the height of the American
Revolution, Cheyney observed the British crossing
a ford to encircle George Washington's troops.
Cheyney rode to warn General Washington that
the British were flanking them to the north.
This report contradicted the predicted British
attack route. While the British General
William Howe defeated the patriots,
Washington was able to escape, in part
due to Cheyney's warning.
After the war, Cheyney was chosen as
