The student counterpart to Innovate is Create, opening this fall. Stocked with cutting-edge equipment for text, multimedia, audio, laser, and 3D projects, the center will allow students to move freely from concept to design to implementation in a single space. "The classroom environment hasn't changed since the beginning of the industrial revolution," Blaine says. "It was set up as an assembly line model for learning. We wanted to create a space to facilitate the kind of teaching we want." Classrooms, too, have been outfitted with high-tech details that transform learning. Digital whiteboards encourage teacher-student collaboration on a modern scale. And videoconferencing capabilities redefine "field trips." "You can project your classroom to anywhere in the world," Blaine says. "Or, we could bring someone from anywhere in the world into the classroom. All you need is an Internet connection on the other side." This month, the university will host its second annual CyberLearning Summit (February 6-7). Representatives from across the country will attend to learn how JSU is changing education.
