C E L E B R AT I N G BLACK HISTORY HBCUs By Meghan Modafferi EMPOWERING EDUCATION Coppin State University impacts Baltimore and beyond. 82 FEBRUARY 2014 ★ usairwaysmag.com graduating its first four-year class of teachers a little more than 40 years later. The college continued to grow, gaining accreditation in 1962, establishing a nursing school in 1974 (celebrating its 40th anniversary in 2014), and officially achieving university status in 2004. Today, CSU students can study in one of four thriving colleges - arts & science and education; business; nursing; and behavioral and social sciences. The university is most widely celebrated for its nursing, criminal justice, science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and teaching programs. Of course, no matter which major students choose, they'll graduate prepared to engage in analytical thought, display socially responsible behavior, and embark on a lifetime of learning. Alumna Jan Lennon was the first female director of security at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. As these and many other successful graduates show, Coppin State University (CSU) is committed to improving its local and national community. But why stop there? In its mission statement, CSU not only encourages students to become "critical, creative, and compassionate citizens of the community," but also "leaders of the world." The university's namesake, Fanny Jackson Coppin, was a model leader. Although born into slavery, she became an influential teacher, principal, and school founder in adulthood. Passionate about making education available for African American students, Coppin eventually became the second African American woman to graduate from college. To celebrate her memory, CSU makes a special effort to reach first-generation college students. Founded in 1900, CSU began as a oneCoppin State University year training class for African American 2500 West North Avenue teachers who wanted to work in Baltimore's Baltimore, MD 410.951.3000 segregated elementary schools.
