PREPARED TO SERVE For more than 100 years, Delaware State University has enhanced education in its community. ★ PHOTOS COURTESY OF DELAWARE STATE UNIVERSITY When Delaware State University (DSU) was originally established in 1891, it was known as the State College for Colored Students (SCCS). As the institution expanded, the school established a reputation as a valuable resource for African Americans in the state. For decades following the abolition of slavery in 1865, state governments were not required to make provisions for the education of African American youth. In the 1870s and '80s, Delaware had just 30 schools for black students, which were all funded by private citizens. To address this need, the SCCS established a preparatory school Clockwise from left: to help more young people reach college. an SCCS class in the late 1890s, current Then, in the late 1890s, the SCCS founded DSU President Dr. the Normal School to train high school graduates Harry L. Williams, to become teachers. Through this program, and the laboratory high school building the college became a critical learning institution for African American teachers in Delaware. By the 1920s, the SCCS had established a laboratory high school that provided secondary education to many African American children from central and southern Delaware. Today, DSU continues its mission of preparing students for college with plans to open a new Early College High School later this year. A priority of this high school will be training students in the STEM disciplines - science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
