S 62 jAnuAry 2013 By DaviD armstrong an Francisco is home to two fine arts gems: the de Young Museum, in Golden Gate Park, and the Legion of Honor, in Lincoln Park overlooking the Golden Gate Bridge and the Marin Headlands. Together they are among the most-visited art museums west of the Mississippi. Both museums make up the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco (FAMSF) and are, fittingly, works of art in their own right. The de Young, founded in 1895, occupies a strikingly contemporary 2005 building wrapped in a gorgeous copper facade and topped by a spiraling, 144-foot-high tower. The Legion of Honor pays architectural homage to the Palais de la Legion d’Honneur in Paris with a 1924 Beaux Arts building dedicated to Californians usairwaysmag.com who fell in World War I; the coolly elegant Legion of Honor was extensively renovated and expanded in 1995. de Young Museum Featuring American paintings, sculpture, and decorative arts from the 17th century to the present, the de Young also showcases art from Africa, Oceania, and the Americas, and boasts significant collections of costumes, textiles, and international contemporary art.
