It is paired with a companion exhibition, Rembrandt’s Century, also at the de Young, which features more than 200 17th-century prints and drawings from the FAMSF’s collection of works on paper, including ones by Rembrandt and his contemporaries. “In February and March, the Getty [in Los Angeles] will also have a Vermeer on view, Woman in Blue Reading a Letter, from the Rijksmuseum,” Beneﬁeld adds. With both on the West Coast, “It’s a unique opportunity for art lovers and cultural travelers alike.’’ Legion of Honor Fronted by a handsome courtyard that encompasses a glass pyramid and a bronze cast of Auguste Rodin’s The Thinker, the Legion of Honor holds collections of ancient art from the Mediterranean region, as well as European paintings, sculpture, and decorative arts. It also houses the Achenbach Foundation for Graphic Arts’s exquisite collection of works on paper. One-of-a-kind treasures at the Legion of Honor also include a custom Skinner pipe organ, with its 4,500 pipes cleverly and seamlessly hidden behind a canvas apse painted to look like marble. Public concerts are presented each weekend. Running through March 17 in its only U.S. location, Royal Treasures from the Louvre: Louis XIV to Marie-Antoinette presents gemencrusted vases and ﬁne porcelain owned by 18th-century French royalty. The royals “lived in smaller rooms, and the objects produced for them were ﬁnely and intensely decorated because they were so close to the viewer,’’ says Martin Chapman, curator of European decorative art for FAMSF.
