January 11–12 staged reading of The Wash by Philip Kan Gotanda and the LHT Bringing the Art to the Audience series. lhtsf.org Lorraine Hansberry Theatre The oldest continuously producing African American theater on the West Coast, Lorraine Hansberry Theatre (LHT) has shined its spotlight on actors such as Danny Glover and Robert Gossett, put on musicals that celebrate legends like Duke Ellington, and produced dramas like those written by Lorraine Hansberry, the theater’s namesake. “American Theater is in the midst of a process of redeﬁnition, and African American and multicultural playwrights are at the forefront of that process,” says LHT’s artistic director, Steven Anthony Jones. This year’s program continues in that trailblazing spirit with its Museum of the African Diaspora Innovation is at the heart of the Museum of the African Diaspora’s (MoAD) multidisciplinary programs. Showcasing the history, art, and rich forms of cultural expression that resulted from the dispersal of Africans throughout the world, MoAD is one of the only museums focused exclusively on African diaspora culture. “Since opening in 2005, MoAD has celebrated the contributions of people of African descent and focused on our shared African ancestry and common humanity through stellar exhibitions, education, and public programs,” says Grace C. Stanislaus, executive director.
