And winter is a great time to visit. Crowds are thinner, tickets are easier to get, and there’s more room to roam with the opening of areas typically closed in the summer to protect nesting birds. That means you can explore the Agave Trail, offering hard-to-beat views of San Francisco and the Parade Grounds. Set in the San Francisco Bay, Alcatraz was the site of a Civil War fort and military prison before hosting the famous federal maximumsecurity prison from 1934 until 1963. See where prisoners ate, slept, and exercised while learn- ing more about the island’s past from the award-winning Alcatraz Cellhouse audio tour, available in ten languages and featuring actual correctional ofﬁcers and former prisoners. You’ll also discover the island’s lesser-known history, such as the American Indian occupation that spurred changes in federal policy toward tribes. Or experience the Rock’s softer side with a docent-led Alcatraz Historic Gardens Tour through restored gardens. Tours leave the Alcatraz dock every Friday and Sunday at 9:30 a.m. Ferry rides to the island are exclusively provided by Alcatraz Cruises, the ofﬁcial National Park Service concessionaire. The island is open seven days a week with frequent daily departures from Pier 33.
