Entertainment. # BY MICHELLE LOCKE Gateway to Asia F 72 JANUARY 2013 Explore 6,000 years of culture at the Asian Art Museum. rom the curve of delicate jade carvings to the power of monumental stone sculptures, the Asian Art Museum tells the story of a cultural history spanning six millennia. This is one of the largest museums in the Western world devoted to Asian art, with a collection of more than 18,000 works, and a visit offers a comprehensive introduction to the major cultures of Asia. Divided into seven regions — South Asia; the Persian World and West Asia; Southeast Asia; the Himalayas and the Tibetan Buddhist World; China; Korea; and Japan — the collection galleries showcase more than 2,500 pieces, including paintings, textiles, furniture, arms and armor, basketry, and more. In addition to the collection, the museum presents internationally renowned exhibitions, such as the upcoming China’s Terracotta Warriors: The First Emperor’s Legacy (Feb. 22–May 27), which includes eight of the life-size terra-cotta warriors — as well as two horses — built to protect the emperor in the afterlife. Also upcoming are In the Moment: Japanese Art from the Larry Ellison Collection (June 28–Sept. 22) and In Grand Style: The Art of Korean Celebration (Oct. 25–Jan. 12, 2014). The museum opened in Golden Gate Park in 1966, thanks to a gift to San Francisco by industrialist Avery Brundage, and moved to its current home at San Francisco’s Civic Center in 2003. Educational programs for all ages include free guided tours of the galleries, live performances and artist demonstrations, storytelling, hands-on art activities, lectures, and community celebrations such as Lunar New Year festivities.
