F Enjoy a look at San Francisco’s underwater scene at Aquarium of the Bay. BY MICHELLE LOCKE Fish Tales ramed by the Golden Gate Bridge, San Francisco Bay is a breathtaking sight. But there’s a lot going on beneath the surface, too — a world that can be discovered at Aquarium of the Bay. Unique in its focus on San Francisco, the aquarium is home to more than 20,000 aquatic animals from the bay and nearby waters, including nearly 200 different species of sharks, skates, rays, jellyﬁsh, rockﬁsh, ﬂatﬁsh, eels, sea stars, and other marine life. The 50,000-square-foot facility has exhibits holding more than one million gallons of ﬁltered bay water, including 300 feet of crystalclear tunnels that offer a scuba diver’s perspective. Watch rays, sturgeon, and other inhabitants glide overhead, and go face-to-ﬁn with local shark species, including sevengill sharks, which can grow to more than ten feet long and are the bay’s largest predators. A second touch pool is home to invertebrates such as sea stars and anemones. The recently added Feed the Shark tours grant a behind-the-scenes look at the aquarium, including areas not on exhibit such as the baby jellies nursery, as well as the thrill of feeding a bucket of seafood to sharks, rays, skates, and other ﬁshes.
