With a mission “to explore, explain, and protect the natural world,” the California Academy of Sciences does so in captivating fashion through the work of dedicated educators and scientists, more than a dozen major exhibits, and 38,000 live animals. At the Philippine Coral Reef, windows offer an underwater view of one of the planet’s most diverse ecosystems. In Rainforests of the World, encounter denizens of Borneo, Madagascar, and Costa Rica, then descend in a glass elevator into an Amazonian ﬂooded forest. Learn about the science behind earthquakes, and experience BY BRIAN COOK a major-magnitude jolt in a simulator, before watching Earthquake: Evidence of a Restless Planet at the planetarium. Next, head up to the living roof — 2.5 acres of native California plant life that’s a key part of the museum’s green building strategy. The academy also houses a research collection with more than 26 million specimens and artifacts. The Academy was founded in 1853, but its current 400,000-square-foot building in Golden Gate Park opened in 2008 and has been recognized as the world’s most eco-friendly museum. In addition to the living roof (providing insulation, storm-water absorption, and wildlife habitat), the structure also boasts recycled denim insulation and other green innovations. In 2011, the U.S. Green Building Council presented the Academy with its second Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Platinum award — the group’s highest recognition.
