BY LAUREN EBERLE ven if you haven’t visited San Francisco, chances are you’ve interacted with one of the city’s most impressive museums. In fact, 80 percent of the world’s science centers use exhibits developed at the Exploratorium, the global leader in informal learning. Founded by renowned scientist Frank Oppenheimer in 1969, the Exploratorium changed the way we learn. “No one ever flunked a museum,” quipped Oppenheimer, summarizing his vision for making learning more informal, accessible, and authentic. The Exploratorium isn’t fancy — it feels more like a laboratory, where the exhibit-building process is open to the public, and a state-ofthe-art Tinkering Studio invites visitors to invent their own projects and exhibits. “This process of making, doing, and experimenting is what drives creativity,” says Linda Dackman, Exploratorium’s public information director. “The sheer vastness of all you can do is what seems to surprise visitors most.” The museum’s size and scope will triple this spring as the Exploratorium unveils its renovation of historic Pier 15 in the heart of the revitalized waterfront district. In addition to 150 new hands-on exhibits, art installations, and a sustainable restaurant, the site will feature a Bay Observatory, an all-glass structure to discover both the city and the bay. A number of exhibits (some ticketed, some free) are outdoors, while 1.5 acres of public space will feature a plaza, cafe, and striking views, creating a civic gathering place rooted in fun and learning, and a lasting tribute to Oppenheimer’s world-changing work.
