S sfport.com visitﬁshermans wharf.com BY MICHELLE LOCKE teeped in San Francisco history, Fisherman’s Wharf boasts fabulous views, tall-masted ships, ﬁshing boats, and an eclectic mix of famous attractions. For more than a century, the city’s northern waterfront has been home to ﬁshermen and processors. Today, it’s evolved from an industrial area to one that caters to millions of visitors drawn to the sightseeing, shopping, and dining. That evolution continues into the new year. This month, the Port of San Francisco opens the Pier 43 Promenade, a new pedestrian walkway that links PIER 39 and the Taylor Street crab sellers; visitors will be able to walk along the edge of San Francisco Bay as they take in views of the historic Pier 43 Ferry Arch and Alcatraz Island. Grab a hot dog or a bread bowl of clam chowder as you stroll the waterfront and watch the sea lions basking in the sun. Also this month, improvements are under way on the main thoroughfare of Jefferson Street between Hyde and Jones Streets. The project includes widened sidewalks, new pedestrian lighting, and a switch from one-way to two-way trafﬁc, making it possible to bicycle the scenic route in both directions. The renovations come as the wharf prepares for an event-ﬁlled year. Toast the port’s 150th anniversary and enjoy the July 4th at the Wharf Celebration, followed by the Louis Vuitton Cup yacht races. In September, the America’s Cup sails across the bay, and in October, the city’s largest civic event, Fleet Week, features U.S. Navy and Coast Guard vessels, alongside breathtaking aerial acrobatics. From crack pilots to cracked crab, it’s all happening at the wharf.
