In the Gallery of California Art, visitors take in one of the largest and most comprehensive collections of California art, from Gold Rush– era daguerreotypes and 19th-century landscape paintings to works by acclaimed modern-era artists such as Richard Diebenkorn, Dorothea Lange, and Wayne Thiebaud, among others. The Gallery of California History chronicles the state’s past with historical artifacts, art pieces, original photographs, and oral histories that trace the waves of migration that created and continues to shape the state’s diverse population. This May, the museum will open its reinstalled Gallery of California Natural Sciences, which will showcase a fresh focus on the state’s natural history, the threats it faces, and people’s relationship with nature. A portrait of California’s rich biodiversity, the transformed gallery is the only museum presentation of its kind. Exploring millions of years in 1.8 million artifacts, the Oakland Museum of California tells the state’s long and still-unfolding story. he arts are alive and thriving in dynamic Oakland, but no place showcases California’s story with more style and depth than the Oakland Museum of California. Designed in 1969 as a “museum for the people,” the downtown Oakland institution remains as innovative as ever, thanks to a dramatic 2010 renovation and expansion that introduced groundbreaking exhibits and interactive experiences focusing on the Golden State’s art, history, nature, and diverse cultures. The architecturally striking museum — considered one of the most signiﬁcant examples of midcentury modernism in the United States — lures visitors with its terraced gardens, koi pond, and outdoor sculpture courtyards.
