Celebrate San Francisco Art. Culture. Entertainment. # Garden of Earthly Delights Around the world in 55 acres at San Francisco Botanical Garden S BY MICHELLE LOCKE tep into San Francisco Botanical Garden and witness flower power on a global scale; more than 8,000 types of plants thrive in this living museum. The grounds —55 acres of landscaped and open spaces located in Golden Gate Park — are organized by geographic region and include plants from California, New Zealand, Asia, and South Africa, among others. Want to see California’s famous redwoods up close? Stroll through the century-old Redwood Grove. A short walk transports you to the Southern Hemisphere by way of the Andean Cloud Forest collection, where you’ll find the rare Passiflora parritae, a passion vine known for its brilliant orange flowers. The secret to the garden’s diversity is found in the Bay Area’s mild temperatures, wet winters, dry summers, and frequent summer coastal fog. Clockwise from left: Magnolia campbellii, Moon Viewing Garden, Entry Garden, hummingbird on aloe This range of climate conditions exists in few other botanical gardens in the world. Due to these natural advantages, San Francisco Botanical Garden boasts unique botanical collections. The garden is also home to the most significant collection of magnolias for conservation outside China. Each winter, the trees burst into bloom in a riot of pink and white. The spectacle reaches its peak from mid-January through March, and the garden hosts special programs including free Magnolia Walk maps, daytime and moonlight docent-led tours, and an array of fun family activities. So add the garden to your itinerary. You’ll find a world of horticulture at your feet. San Francisco Botanical Garden The garden is located in the southeast corner of Golden Gate Park, with entrances at the corner of Ninth Ave. and Lincoln Way and at Martin Luther King Drive off the Music Concourse.
