F SFJAZZ Center is a ﬁtting showcase for one of the most dynamic art forms. or the largest jazz producer and presenter on the West Coast, a sparkling new building is music to many ears. Jazzy New Digs The SFJAZZ Center, a luminous structure at Franklin and Fell Streets in San Francisco’s high-culture district, is the ﬁrst stand-alone building in the United States created speciﬁcally for jazz. Its intimate 700-seat concert hall breaks down the distance between artist and audience and enhances the creation of improvised music. SFJAZZ brings the greatest names in jazz, Latin, and other global music to the center, among them Sonny Rollins, Tony Bennett, Esperanza Spalding, Chick Corea, Portuguese fado singer Mariza, banjo wizard Béla Fleck, and the Afro-Cuban All Stars. The building was designed by the award-winning San Francisco architectural ﬁrm Mark Cavagnero Associates. Creating the amphitheater-like Robert N. Miner Auditorium — named for the late Oracle cofounder whose family contributed generously to the building — Cavagnero and his colleagues combined the acoustic qualities of a great hall like Carnegie with the intimate vibe of a jazz club.
