In fact, guests prefer blankets over benches, the outdoors over concert halls. Forming the nonproﬁt Stern Grove Festival Association in 1938, Rosalie preserved the park for free performances. The event thrives today with the help of donations and community support. For many, Stern Grove Festival is a treasured annual tradition. Fans mark their places at sunrise, spreading out blankets and picnic baskets hours before the 2 p.m. kickoff. Vendors peddle food and beverages, and fans come equipped with wine, cheese, and other festive fare. This year’s lineup will include the San Francisco Symphony, San Francisco Ballet, and San Francisco Opera, in addition to a collection of top pop, jazz, rock, and world-music performers.
