absence of true ski-in, ski-out lodging. Fortunately, there's an exception: Vail's very best hotel, the swank Arrabelle, is complete with slope-side ski valet, one of Vail's finest spas, an ice rink, and an attached retail and dining area. It's so impressive that world champion skier Lindsey Vonn lived there for years. Despite Vail's luxury reputation, there are more affordable hotel and condo options if you're willing to travel a bit. Costs drop the farther you get from the lifts, especially across the I-70 pedestrian bridge or outside the two central base areas, Vail Village and Lionshead. From the Denver airport, Vail (vail.com) is just under two hours on interstate highways, and Beaver Creek (beaver creek.com) is about 15 minutes farther. A car is not necessary at either resort, and the Colorado Mountain Express (coloradomountainexpress.com) offers frequent door-to-door shuttle service to and from the airport. Most everything you'd need - lodging, dining, and amenities - are all in one cozy base village, laid out around the centerpiece ice rink. And while Vail sprawls right along the interstate, Beaver Creek sits atop its own access road with a more dramatic sense of arrival and self-containment. As Vail strives to be all things to all people - and largely succeeds - Beaver Creek focuses on pleasing families and boasts many special touches you won't find elsewhere. Whether skiing or snowboarding, it's often a struggle to haul cumbersome gear in clunky boots, especially with kids. With that in mind, Beaver Creek employs uniformed Ski School Ambassadors to greet arriving families and help them carry their Clockwise from top left: groomed trail at Vail, rack of Colorado lamb at Elway's, and the Plaza Ice Rink at the Arrabelle usairwaysmag.com JANUARY 2014 37 http://www.vail.com http://www.beavercreek.com http://www.beavercreek.com http://www.coloradomountainexpress.com http://www.turtlebusbar.com http://www.turtlebusbar.com http://www.usairwaysmag.com
