It takes the validation of the world’s premier mobility company. In Greensboro, Honda Aircraft Company did exactly that — not once, but twice. Yes, the broader Piedmont Triad has MROs, FBOs, and OEMs aplenty. It has an international airport with three runways (including a key 10,000-footer) and excess capacity. It has advanced aviation training programs. It has the only FedEx air cargo hub in the Southeast. But when Honda Aircraft selected Greensboro’s Piedmont Triad International Airport (PTI) for its world headquarters in 2006, it sent a message to the global aviation community that it had found the ideal place to design and manufacture the highly anticipated and futuristic HondaJet. Last fall, the company underscored that point by choosing PTI over other viable sites for its ﬁrst $20 million HondaJet MRO facility. I In all, Honda Aircraft will employ more than 1,000 workers locally, thanks to a signiﬁcant investment in the new, sprawling campus at the airport. “We intend to offer HondaJet customers an overall ownership experience that is second to none in business aviation, and one that is commensurate with all the best attributes of Honda,” says Michimasa Fujino, president and CEO of Honda Aircraft and the visionary behind the HondaJet. Of Fujino’s commitment to the state and region, Governor Bev Perdue says, “It’s clear we’ve got momentum when global companies like Honda Aircraft decide to expand operations in North Carolina. This will enhance our aerospace cluster in the Triad.” The focus of all this attention is the seven-seat HondaJet, which has become the talk of the industry.
