LEARNING TO FLY # At Guilford Technical Community College with Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, the world’s top aviation institution. “We are a one-stop shop in aviation education and can meet anyone’s training needs,” says Richard Pagan, GTCC’s head of transportation technologies. “We work very closely with the industry to customize training, and our programs are certiﬁed by the FAA.” How important is this training in the Piedmont Triad? TIMCO, one of the nation’s largest maintenance and repair operations (MROs), depends on GTCC for a steady pipeline of skilled employees in all facets of its operations. And Honda Aircraft Co. cites the college as a prime reason it selected Greensboro not only for its world headquarters, but also as the manufacturing location of the new HondaJet corporate aircraft. Given all the regional job opportunities and high student demand, GTCC is expanding the program with a new building that will house the aviation management and career pilot programs, as well as Embry-Riddle’s Greensboro center. While graduates readily transition to any of the more than 20 regional aviation-related companies in ﬁelds such as aircraft maintenance and manufacturing, aviation dispatching, and cargo operations, others often join major airlines, corporate ﬂeets, or ﬁxed-based operators. “No matter what your interests are in aviation in pursuit of a career,” Pagan says, “you can do it here at GTCC.” GTCC students become familiar with every aircraft system. Y ou can’t have a burgeoning aviation sector without a skilled workforce. In the Piedmont Triad, the go-to place for training is Guilford Technical Community College (GTCC), one of only two such institutions in North Carolina with a full aviation curriculum. Operating out of two locations at Piedmont Triad International Airport, GTCC offers associatedegree coursework and training in avionics, composite training, nondestructive testing, aviation management, and aviation career pilot and aviation systems.
