After World War II, it became the home of Piedmont Airlines, one of the nation’s top regional carriers that merged with US Airways in the late 1980s. When commercial air service ended at Smith Reynolds in 2000, the airport began the process of reinventing itself as an aviation service center. Some 15 companies are now based there, including Landmark Aviation, a ﬁxed-based operator that provides everything for charter services from basic repairs to meeting space. “Smith Reynolds is an economic engine in Winston-Salem and the Piedmont Triad,” says airport director Mark Davidson. “The infrastructure required to accommodate a wide range of aircraft and businesses is already in place and ready to take ﬂight.” A typical diverse mix of aircraft on the ramp at Smith Reynolds Airport for executive travel there. These types of centrally located hangars are easily accessible for visiting executives, and more are available. “Smith Reynolds is an important piece of the Triad’s aviation asset base,” says Kevin Baker, executive director of the Piedmont Triad Airport Authority. “It is clearly one of the key reliever airports to PTI, but also has a number of other important attributes.” The airport offers an array of services for recreational aviation and training. For example, Piedmont Flight Training is the largest ﬂight school in the state, granting certiﬁcations from Private Pilot to Multi-Engine Airline Transport Pilot, which qualiﬁes pilots for the airline industry. Established in 1927 as an airﬁeld to attract famed aviator Charles Lindbergh on his crosscountry barnstorming tour with the Spirit of St. Louis, Smith Reynolds boasts a rich history.
