Address for Success A modest brick cottage in Fayetteville stands large in u.S. history. I t all started one day in 1975, when both Bill and Hillary Clinton were teaching at the University of Arkansas School of Law. Hillary was leaving on a business trip, and as Bill drove her to the airport, she commented on the charm of the house at 930 California Boulevard in Fayetteville — an address close to campus and one that Hillary had noticed many times. In Bill’s words, “When Hillary came back from her trip, I said, ‘Remember that little house you like so much? I bought it. You have to marry me now, because I can’t live there alone.’ ” They made their vows in the living room of the home on October 11, 1975. Today, the cottage is the Clinton House Museum, opened in 2005. By lance Elko To honor the former president and secretary of state, California Boulevard was renamed Clinton Drive in 2010 when President Clinton dedicated the First Ladies Garden on the property. The impressive backyard garden features plantings, such as Cherry and Dogwood trees and Knockout Roses, favored by Hillary and other first ladies. During a one-hour tour, guests peruse memorabilia such as a replica of Hillary’s wedding dress, vintage video footage from campaigns, and photos of the young couple. The tour also includes anecdotes about Bill and Hillary’s early years, as well as time spent in the garden. Today the 1931 home stands as the only one the Clintons owned before entering state and national politics. Fittingly, it’s also on the National Register of Historic Places.
