Art Among Friends: Four Collections of American Art, running through November 2, includes 81 American impressionist artworks by the likes of John Singer Sargent, Childe Hassam, William Merritt Chase, Aldro Hibbard, and others, loaned by four western North Carolina collectors. “This is the only time all of these works will be shown together,” says museum executive director Joann Mitchell. “They provide a unique view of this school [of art]. It’s an amazing opportunity for art lovers.” Curated by Jonathan Stuhlman of Charlotte’s Mint Museum, the exhibit also explores the development of painting styles in America, usairwaysmag.com the evolution of women painters, how and why these four collectors started acquiring the works, and their influences on one another. BRAHM opened in October 2011, 12 years after Lamont and Cora Ann Hudson offered their collection of paintings by acclaimed mountain artist Elliott Daingerfield, provided there could be a suitable place to display them. “We quickly realized that a museum was wanted and needed in Blowing Rock,” Mitchell says. A group of art and history lovers formed a board of directors and began fundraising. The resulting mountain stone and wood building — which boasts six galleries, a theater, and an education center — fittingly stands on a corner of land next to Daingerfield’s home and studio.
