Year-round programming led by park interpreters ranges from fly-casting and kayaking lessons to astronomy viewing and Dutch oven–cooking. Hobbs State Park-Conservation Area near Rogers is a 12,056-acre retreat with many diverse hiking trails. Unique to the park is permitted seasonal hunting and a 100-yard public shooting range. Roughly 2,500 acres adjoining the Ozark National Forest make up Devil’s Den State Park. Popular with mountain bikers and families, it’s one of Arkansas’s original state parks built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s. In Huntsville, War Eagle Creek is the main draw for Withrow Springs State Park; canoe and kayak rentals are available for a leisurely float down this mountain stream. On the Water Anglers will appreciate Beaver Lake. An impoundment of the White River, it’s the largest lake in these parts, with 28,000 acres of clear water. The lake brims with largemouth and smallmouth bass fishing, plus plentiful With so many natural resources and open spaces, there’s plenty to keep outdoor enthusiasts busy year-round. supplies of crappie, bream, white bass, and channel and spoonbill catfish. The nation’s second National Blueway, the White River just below Beaver Dam, is a rewarding cold-water trout fishery. A number of other waterways provide even more opportunities for canoeing and kayaking. The Kings River is 86 miles of floatable water accented by massive rock bluffs, shady tree-lined banks, and clear pools. Known for excellent whitewater with Class II rapids, the National Wild and Scenic Mulberry River is another popular float destination. Getting there is fun too via Arkansas Highway 23, part of which is the Pig Trail Scenic Byway twisting through the Boston Mountains region. History, Too! Heritage tourism is in full swing here at a unique expanse of park space at two Civil War sites, commemorating the area’s role in the conflict. Prairie Grove Battlefield State Park’s one-mile, paved walking tour and fivemile driving tour interpret the Union and Confederate clash in 1862 that resulted in 2,700 casualties. The state’s largest battle reenactment takes place here biennially on even-numbered years the first weekend of December. Consisting of 4,300 acres and the best-preserved Civil War battlefield in the nation, Pea Ridge National Military Park is the site of a pivotal battle — also in 1862 — that saved Missouri for the Union. The park offers a sevenmile, self-guided driving tour, and hiking, biking, and equestrian trails. With so many natural resources and open spaces, there’s plenty to keep outdoor enthusiasts busy year-round. Fortunately, the area’s mild climate allows for just that. Enjoy!
