A less strenuous option is the 20 miles of trails (several of which are easy to moderate) maintained by Beech Mountain. After working up a sweat, cool off with a water adventure. Formed in Ashe County, the New River is one of only 14 American Heritage Rivers in the country. Because of its shallow, gentle waters, the New River is ideal for family activities such as canoeing, kayaking, and tubing, while the opportunity for occasional minor rapids adds excitement. Public launch areas are located in the scenic New River State Park. Find more outdoor fun in Wilkes County at the 14,400-acre Stone Mountain State Park. A long list of activities - camping, walking trails, horseback riding, educational events, historic sites, ﬁshing, picnicking, and even rock climbing - is sure to keep you busy. Find frogs, salamanders, trout, and beavers in the streams and small ponds, and enjoy the multitude of birds that inhabit the area, including scarlet tanager, whip-poor-will, ruffed grouse, turkey, and pileated woodpecker. Or perhaps you'd like to spend a night in cabins or camping along the tranquil Moravian Creek, usairwaysmag.com where wonders include the marvelous Moravian Falls waterfall, plus enough ﬁshing, trails, and water sliding to keep kids content for hours. Is a spectator sport more your speed? The Blowing Rock Charity Horse Show, now in its 91st year, is a summer tradition in Blowing Rock - as are its homemade ice cream and fresh lemonade. Take to the grand stands July 22-August 3, and you'll do a good deed: Proceeds go to support local charities. Cultural Studies From jam sessions in century-old general stores and small-town barber shops to multiple-day ﬁddlers' conventions and folk festivals, traditional mountain music preserves western North Carolina's past and energizes its present. Pick up a copy of the Blue Ridge Music Trails of North Carolina guidebook (produced by the Blue Ridge National Heritage Area and the North Carolina Arts Council) at the High Country Host Visitor Center in Boone for locations, history, musicians, and more. Foster an early love for the arts (or keep the spark going) with events at Appalachian State University. The month-long An Appalachian Summer Festival in Boone features live performances and free activities, including a Family Film Night (July 25) and Carnegie Hall's National Youth Orchestra (July 26). For a year-round dose of culture, check out the Turchin Center for the Visual Arts, a free museum with events and workshops for all ages. A visit to West Jefferson ﬁnds a budding arts district, restaurants, murals, and shops. Be sure to check out Mt. Jefferson State Park, which overlooks the city from 4,700 feet.
