CASHINYOURDIAMONDS.COM steeply from the coast, teeming with monkeys and tropical flora. He saw paradise, and as one of the wealthiest men in Central America, he had the means to transform the setting into a luxury boutique resort known as Mukul. When it opened less than two years ago, the main attractions were supposed to be the golf course designed by David Kidd (of Bandon Dunes fame), the incredible spa (actually six separate spas), the beach, and utter relaxation. But Mukul has quickly turned into a surf hotspot for both accomplished riders and rank beginners - like me. When last year's Masters champion and number-two ranked golfer in the world, Adam Scott, and Mukul his fellow Australian, US Open champ Resort Geoff Ogilvy, came here on vacation, they spent more time surfing than on the fairways. "The reason I moved here is because this part of the coast of Nicaragua and Costa Rica gets both the summer and winter swell seasons," says Gemma Yates, who runs the on-site branch of TropicSurf as lead instructor. An Australian-based high-end surf school and trip operator, TropicSurf has resort-based schools around the world, in places like Indonesia and Tahiti. "Even the most famous surf spots like Hawaii and Bali have a season, but here it's year-round, and that's rare." For most of the year, consistent 4-8 foot waves breaking just off the resort beach are absolutely perfect for learning, while a five-minute stroll down the sand, where a rocky peninsula juts into the Pacific, is home to the much bigger "Manzanillo" break, one of the most famous surf spots in Nicaragua. It's the best of both worlds on one empty stretch of sand. TropicSurf's raison d'être is seclusion, because many of the world's most popular surf spots are just that: popular, as in crowded. The Mexican coast around Puerto Vallarta, for example, is home to many surf schools. It's a well-known learning spot, but also crowded with experienced locals, which means everyone jockeys for the same waves. Here in Nicaragua it's rare to see more than half a dozen people in the water, and during three days my wife and I shared our surf with precisely no one. Once we turned ourselves over to LEARN-TO-SURF SPOTS NICARAGUA The area around Guacalito de la Isla and San Juan del Sur on the southern Pacific coast is full of surf lodges and schools. One of the most established is Giant's Foot Surf Camp (giantsfootsurf.com) on Playa Gigante, while Mukul is easily the most chic luxury resort in Nicaragua. mukulresort.com SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA This is the laid-back epicenter of surf culture, thanks to warmer water, sunny skies, and good beginner spots around La Jolla, Del Mar, and Carlsbad. delmar surfschool.com, socalsurflessons.com, surfdiva.com WAIKIKI BEACH, HONOLULU Olympic swimmer Duke Kahanamoku introduced surfing to the rest of the world from this spot a century ago. It's perfect for beginners, but for a more formal immersion, try the Hans Hedemann Surf School. Hedemann and several instructors are former pro surfers. hhsurf.com RINCON, PUERTO RICO This is the rare spot that appeals to everyone from beginners to the world's best - it's also where legend Kelly Slater won his record tenth World Championship. The island's northwest shore has a true surftown vibe with lots of shops and lodges and several notable schools. surflessons puertorico.com, rinconsurfschool.com FARTHER AFIELD TropicSurf is a luxury-oriented surf instruction and travel company, specializing in uncrowded spots with programs for all abilities.
