FL Panhandle Shipwreck Trail dramatic. There's more relief, because they're taller," Greene explains. And a taller water column means a greater diversity of marine life. "You see all the big game fish," Greene notes. An avid fisherman, he never ceases to be amazed at the variety. "It's 'Oh! There's an Amberjack!' Or 'There's a grouper, there's a snapper!' Literally any kind you would want to fish." Greene even spotted a Goliath grouper, an endangered species that can weigh up to 800 pounds. For all the thrills of the FAMI tugs, Greene recommends investigating the other wrecks off of Panama City's coast. There are four more on the Shipwreck Trail (Black Bart, an oil supply vessel; USS Accokeek, a fleet tug that traveled the world; USS Strength, a World War II minesweeper; and USS Chippewa, a Navy tug that set speed records), and, says Greene, about 25 other artificial reefs in less than 100 feet of water. "We have some of the most readily accessible areas in Florida," he says. In addition to the aquatic riches in the Gulf of Mexico, Florida's Panhandle communities offer a variety of diversions to suit every interest. Whether history, arts and culture, nightlife, or natural attractions, there's always something new to discover. Pensacola Perhaps the biggest draw to Pensacola is its beaches, ranked as some of the best in the world by the likes of TripAdvisor, Dr. Beach, and the Travel Channel. You can learn about the area's reputation as the "cradle of Naval aviation" by trying out a flight simulator in the National Museum of Naval Aviation and watching the Blue Angels during one of their practice sessions. If the kids are in tow, ramp up the fun quotient with a visit to Gulf Breeze Zoo, a full 50 acres with wildlife from around the world, or Fast Eddie's Fun Park, with Go-Kart tracks, puttputt golf courses, and an arcade. By evening, you'll have your pick of restaurants or cultural attractions, from opera, theater, symphony, or ballet, to gallery crawls that take place on a Friday every month. visitpensacola.com. Emerald Coast (Destin) A beachcomber's delight, the scene here is pure white sand, owing to its composition of Appalachian quartz that remains cool in the summer and gives off a green cast to the ocean; hence the name "Emerald Coast." Much of the natural beauty is preserved in five beachfront parks, where you can enjoy nature trails, picnics, swimming, surf fishing, and beach volleyball. And don't forget to pack your rod and reel: Destin is known as the "world's luckiest fishing village," thanks to the plentiful fish - red snapper, white trout, and blue marlin; and, the beachfront town boasts the largest charter fleet in Florida and plays host to the Destin Fishing Rodeo 54 JULY 2014 usairwaysmag.com PHOTOS (CLOCKWISE FROM LEFT) BY DUNCAN MCCALL, BY SCOTT WOHRMAN, COURTESY OF VISIT PANAMA CITY BEACH, COURTESY OF PANAMA CITY TDC , AND COURTESY OF VISIT SOUTH WALTON Out of the Water http://www.visitpensacola.com http://www.usairwaysmag.com
