BY NICOLE ESPLIN S an Diego County is known for varied terrain - you can surf at the beach, hike through the desert, and snow ski all in the same day. But who ruled here before humans? 1788 El Prado San Diego, CA 877.946.7797 sdnat.org 84 JULY 2014 usairwaysmag.com PHOTOS COURTESY OF THE SAN DIEGO NATURAL HISTORY MUSEUM San Diego Natural History Museum At the San Diego Natural History Museum, discover 4-million-year-old marine mammal fossils, and learn about species that have called this coastal city their home, from saber-toothed cats and mastodons to dire wolves. Then, time-travel millions of years to 1717, when Pirate Sam Bellamy captured the Whydah on her way to England. His crew successfully plundered cargo from 50 ships before strong storms caused the Whydah to sink. Now, at the Real Pirates exhibition, you can explore more than 200 authentic artifacts that were recovered from the Whydah's wreck. With five floors of exhibitions, a 3D theater, and San Diego's only Foucault pendulum, the museum has something for everyone. Permanent exhibits include: Fossil Mysteries, a walk through prehistoric San Diego, Water: A California Story, where guests can learn about the world's most precious resource, and SKULLS, which features the museum's most unique animal skulls. The museum's in-house research and exhibit staff is working to create an overview of the region to highlight San Diego's habitats and species, from the famed Torrey Pines to the elusive bighorn sheep, and in January 2015, a new permanent exhibition, Coast to Cactus in Southern California, will showcase the region and its unique biodiversity. "Coast to Cactus in Southern California will serve as a snapshot of the region," says Rebecca Handelsman, senior director of communications at the San Diego Natural History Museum. "The idea is to inspire visitors to get out and explore the area. Start here." http://www.sdnat.org http://www.usairwaysmag.com
