US Airways - June 2012 - (Page 8)

embark CEO Letter Thank You for Flying With US Experts at Work The summer travel season is in full swing, and I’m sure many of you flying with us today are on your way to reconnect with family members, to see friends, or to explore a new destination. Getting you to your destination safely, on time, and with your bags is the top priority of our 32,000 employees. Over the past few years US Airways has become one of the most reliable carriers in the U.S., and I’m very proud of what our team has accomplished. A large part of this achievement is due to the efforts of our 3,600 maintenance and engineering team members. Their efforts were recognized by Aviation Week and Overhaul & Maintenance magazine in Dallas in April at the publication’s 2012 aviation maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) awards. These prestigious honors are given to the world’s top ★ Master Mechanic award recipients Clockwise from top left: line-maintenance supervisor James “Red” Leslie, lead mechanic Bill Earnest, and mechanic Glenn Hobbs, all honored this spring, and linemaintenance manager Charlie Marler, who received the award in 2010 MRO and maintenance-related companies that demonstrate outstanding achievement and innovation in the area of technical operations. US Airways received the coveted MRO of the Year Award for airline maintenance excellence. We’re especially gratified by the award because it specifically cites two components that are paramount to our maintenance programs: the Federal Aviation Administration’s validation of our Safety Management System program and our sharp focus on running a reliable airline for our customers. This spring we were also pleased to honor the lifetime accomplishments of three of our aviation maintenance technicians: James “Red” Leslie, a line-maintenance supervisor based in Charlotte; Bill Earnest, a lead mechanic based in Tampa; and Glenn Hobbs, a mechanic based in San Diego. These three received the FAA’s Charles Taylor “Master Mechanic” Award, which recognizes the lifetime accomplishments of senior aviation mechanics. Taylor, the award’s namesake, served as the Wright brothers’ mechanic and is credited with designing and building the engine for their first successful flight. To be eligible for the award, a recipient must have served at least 50 years as an accredited aviation mechanic and have been an FAA-certified mechanic for a minimum of 30 years. Red began his US Airways career with Piedmont Airlines, Bill with Mohawk, and Glenn with PSA. They will have their names added to the FAA’s Roll of Honor, a leather-bound book on display at FAA headquarters in Washington, D.C. Their names will appear alongside Charlie Marler, a line-maintenance manager based in Orlando who received the award in 2010. We’re proud of all four of our “Master Mechanics” and glad to have them on our team. On behalf of all of us at US Airways, thank you for flying with us today. We hope to see you again soon.
