From the campuses of Caltech and the Art Center College of Design, to working warehouses like Rose Palace (where the Rose Parade floats are built) to Castle Press (one of the nation’s busiest printing studios), the range of Muse/ique’s venues reflects the diversity and energy of LA — and so do the guest artists. Muse/ique muse/ique is coming to an unexpected, improvised venue at a metro stop near you. 112 June 2013 usairwaysmag.com photos courtesy of muse/iQue civic auditorium, 3rd floor 300 east green street pasadena, ca 626.539.7085 muse-ique.com “We’ve had rock bassist Flea, Charlie Haden, Jessye Norman, and Arturo Sandoval all in the same season,” says Brian Colburn, executive director. “It’s a total mashup of genres performed in unexpected places — amazing guest artists paired with a counter-conventional orchestra made up of LA’s best musicians.” Founded in 2011, Muse/ique has drawn more than 5,000 music lovers to its avant-garde performances led by artistic director Rachael Worby, who’s known for her insightful and enlightening remarks to audiences. The group also operates Kids/ique, a program for children ages 12 to 18 who are in foster care. Musicians mentor them and provide hands-on interactive music presentations. Then the kids attend shows and go backstage — which in turn inspires the artists. Now fans are tuning up for the Summer Series held on the Beckman Mall Lawn at Caltech. Doors open early for picnicking before the Muse/ique orchestra takes the stage with renowned artists such as jazz vocalist Patti Austin (June 29), cellist Matt Haimovitz (July 27), and soul singer Ellis Hall (August 17).
